Indigenous Cinematics in Latin America

Latin American Indigenous filmmaking is often relegated to a sidebar of screening circuits, training opportunities and teaching syllabuses. Deemed too artisan, unrefined or difficult to grasp, the kaleidoscope of approaches embraced under this banner presents a challenge to the category of Latin American film as we know it.

Indigenous Cinematics is envisaged as an instrument to help recentre its significance, charting the transformations produced in the films, methodologies and epistemologies enacted through the medium.

El cine indígena latinoamericano es a menudo relegado a los márgenes de los circuitos de exhibición, de las ofertas de capacitación y de los currículos académicos. Considerado como demasiado artesanal, rudimentario o difícil de comprender, el caleidoscopio de enfoques representados en este cine implica un desafío a la categoría de cine latinoamericano tal y como la conocemos.

Cinemática Indígena está concebido como instrumento para destacar su importancia, trazando las transformaciones producidas por las películas, así como las metodologías y epistemologías propias del medio.

At its heart, Indigenous Cinematics seeks to transform how and where these works can be viewed, studied and analysed. Examining how authorship and authority are performed aesthetically and discursively in this heterogeneous assemblage of works, the research will forge critical connections between often segregated disciplines to reflect the contribution of Indigenous filmmaking to reimagining subject boundaries.
