“Dolores”. Script development.

The writing of the script has been made through an inside exploration of the history of the struggle of farmers and Indigenous people in Ecuador during the hacienda era of land tenure. It was necessary to write far away from Quito, and the city’s immediate access to media technology, in order to arrive at the current version of the script.

During the scriptwriting process I have received tutorial guidance and support from Camilo Luzuriaga (Ecuadorian producer-director), Alberto Cortés (Mexican director), and Diego Coral (Ecuadorian scriptwriter), all of whom have helped me to improve and develop the film.

Their recommendations have allowed me to produce: a treatment that defines with more clarity the presence of the protagonist, Dolores, and her relationship with her family, contextualised politically and collectively by the struggle for the rights of Indigenous peoples. Additional secondary characters accompanying Dolores have therefore been removed. It has also become clear that for us this creative process is collective, and I’m grateful to all those friends nationally and internationally who have contributed to the making of this film.

Here Patricia shares with some fragments of the script about the life and legacy of Dolores Cacuango.

These pages of the script can also be viewed as a pdf.
