Armando Bautista García

Armando Bautista García is originally from Santa Maria Apazco, an indigenous community in the state of Oaxaca (Mexico).

Armando Bautista García studied a Masters in Comparative Literature at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona with a Ford Foundation scholarship. He has developed theatre plays and children’s stories in both Mixtec and Spanish languages and recently he published Nduchi shin Nuni, a bilingual edition of a story for primary school children. He has written and worked on a range of cinematic projects, including the short film, El Último Consejo (Itandehui Jansen, 2012), awarded the Jury Prize in the 2012 Festival Internacional de Cine Viña del Mar (Chile), Best Short Film in the Rodando Films Festival 2012, and Emerging Talent Prize in the 2013 ImagiNATIVE Indigenous Film and Media Arts Festival, Toronto, Canada. It was also nominated for the Diosa de Plata Critics’ Prize in 2013. Armando has participated in several international workshops, including the Cine Qua Non Lab in Morelia International Film Festival and the Script Station at Berlinale Talents in 2013. Between 2013-2016, he was member of the Mexican National Council of Artists (SNCA), during which time he developed his first feature-length script for Tiempo de lluvia (Itadendehui Jansen, 2018).

Based in Edinburgh, Armando developed this set of resources which explore the art of creative production in the Mixtec language. Drawing on his experience working alongside director Itandehui Jansen, the set of scripts, films, stills and reflections reveals the complex task of collaborating through translation in film production.
